History of Reiki:
Dr. Mikao Usui discovered and developed Reiki in Tokyo in 1922. The Japanese term "rei" refers to an all-pervasive intellect that shapes the cosmos and all forms of life, whereas the Japanese word "ki" denotes the vital life force that courses through all things. Ki, which means "life force" in English, is often called qi or chi in other fields. "Spiritually guided life force energy" is the basic meaning of the two phrases put together.

Before he passed away, Dr. Usui made sure that the healing technique Reiki, would go on by training some masters. Among these teachers, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi advanced Reiki by expanding its application to include specific hand positions for a more holistic approach to health. Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman, visited Dr. Hayashi in 1935. Despite her scepticism at first, she started seeing him every day after experiencing such a profound change in her first session. Ultimately, Takata became a Reiki master after studying the technique on her own. She made some adjustments to the technique and brought it to Hawaii so that others might benefit from the healing practice she had discovered. All Reiki practitioners in the US today may be traced back to Takata, since she personally instructed 22 masters before she passed away.
